CLH1
Aphophyllite
Nasik
Area, Maharashtra Prov., India
11.2x
8.8x 5.1 cm
$69
A cabinet
specimen with a damage free cluster of light green apophyllite crystals
at the center of their matrix. Pretty good fort he price...
I'd estimate the retail value around $200.

 |
 |
|
CLH2
Pyrite on Fluorite, Quartz
Dayu
Co, Ganzhou Prefecture, Jiangxi Province, China
8.2x
6.4x 4.8 cm
$69
A
beautiful, damage free specimen consisting of a spherical pyrite
aggregate on a quartz matrix. There are numerous small, light
purple fluorite cubes sharing the matrix, making for a pleasant color
contrast with the pyrite.

CLH3
Vivianite on Siderite
Dachang
Sn-Polymetallic Ore Field, Nandan Co., Hechi Prefecture, Guangxi Zhuang
Autonomous Region, China
9.1x
4.5x 3.0 cm
$65
An
unusual specimen, consisting of vivianite on siderite from China (!) of
all places. There were one or two very limited finds of this
material a couple years back, and the quality has generally been pretty
low. This is actually one of the nicest pieces I have seen
(despite the saw marks on the sides), and I have priced it at a fraction
of what I have seen Chinese dealers offering (worse) pieces for.
|
 |
 |
 |
|

CLH4
Spodumene var. Kunzite
Pech,
Kunar, Afghanistan
8.2x
4.8x 1.6 cm
$85
A double terminated floated specimen of
gem Kunzite. The color is very light, but as when viewed along
its main axis, the purple color becomes apparent.

 |
 |
|

CLH5
Prehnite with Epidote
Djouga
Diggings, Bendoukou, Region De Kayes, Mali
10.1x
10.1x 5.6 cm
$68
A
green hemisphere of botryoidal prehnite sitting atop a rock matrix
shared by numerous epidote crystals. I thought it was unusual to
see the matrix itself... most specimens tend to be combinations of solid
epidote and prehnite. On this piece the species and individual
crystals have a bit more space....
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLH7 Pentagonite
Wagholi,
near Poonah, Maharashtra, India
8.8x
4.8x 4.0 cm
$50
A cluster of
pentagonite crystals on matrix. Pentagonie has the same chemical
composition as cavansite, though is much rarer.
As
an interesting side note, the quarry where cavansite is found is located
in a huge complex containing several very large quarries. Cavansite
and pentagonite have only been found in any appreciable quantity in part
of one of those quarries, even though all are located within
approximately 2 square kilometers of land.

|
CLH8 Rhodochrosite,
Sphalerite, Quartz
Huachocolpa
Dist., Huancavelica Dept., Peru
13.5x
9.0x 5.5 cm
$86
A cabinet specimen
of rhodochrosite on a quartz matrix, with small clusters of sphalerite.
I have seen bournonite on a few of these, but I am not sure if this one
has that species as well.
The crystal
clusters are oddly curled and wavy... I haven't seen this habit in
rhodochrosite from anywhere else.
|
 |
 |
 |
|

CLH9 Scheelite
Huya
Village, Mt. Xuebaoding, Ping Wu Co., Sichuan Prov., China
5.2x
4.6x 2.4 cm
$66
A complete and fairly gemmy scheelite crystal with excellent
color. Some of the muscovite in the immediate vicinity of the
scheelite has been picked at in order to better expose the crystal...
still, it would be nearly impossible to find a matrix specimen with an
undamaged scheelite crystal, with this color and level of geminess for
this price, anywhere.

 |
|

CLH10 Rhodochrosite,
Sphalerite, Quartz
Huachocolpa
Dist., Huancavelica Dept., Peru
6.6x
5.0x 2.2 cm
$46
A cabinet specimen
of rhodochrosite on a quartz matrix, with small clusters of sphalerite.
I have seen bournonite on a few of these, but I am not sure if this one
has that species as well.
The crystal
clusters are oddly curled and wavy... I haven't seen this habit in
rhodochrosite from anywhere else.

Namacotche,
Mutala, Mozambique
4.0x
2.7x 1.6 cm
$48
A
terminated floater specimen of spodumene from Mozambique, this crystal
is like a piece of yellow glass. When viewed from a particular
angle, it has a greenish hue as well.
No
damage, and a perfect gem crystal.

Amalia
Mine, Santa Rosalia Co., Baja California, Mexico
4.7x
3.4x 3.3 cm
$69
A
cluster of boleite cubes that have been completely replaced by
chrysocolla, on matrix.
This
is one of the better specimens, in terms of richness, and for its sharp
and distinct crystals. The couple cubes that have been halved show
the bright blue chrysocolla interiors that have replaced the boleite.

 |
 |
 |
|
CLH14

Stibnite
Herja,
Marmures Co., Romania
6.8x
4.1x 2.0 cm
$65
An
old specimen of stibnite from the classic Romanian occurrences.
The crystals are particularly hefty for the locality-- they tend to be
thinner, and form tight clusters. A very nice specimen for the
price.
|
 |

Germanite
Tsumeb
Mine, Otjikoto Region, Namibia
2.6x
2.1x 1.6 cm
$42
A
thumbanil specimen of Germanite from the classic Tsumeb mine.
Although it occured elsewhere, Tsumeb was the primary source of this
species, and I haven't actually seen a decent example for sale from any
other locality.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLH22 Clinohumite
Ladjuar Madan, Kokcha Valley, Afghanistan
10.8x6.7x2.6 cm
$120
A very rich clinohumite specimen. These were first found around
2005-2006, and this specimen is from a more recent find. It is
extremely unusual to see so much clinohumite on one piece.
These is some damage, but the price more than takes this into
account, particularly given the richness. At a mineral show, a
piece like this would probably be marked for anywhere from 300 to $500.
|
 |

A
thumbnail of bright pink rhodonite from the find made a few years back

This
find represents the best rhodonite to come from Peru since the 1980's,
and the rhodonites from this mine rank among the best from anywhere

Laochang, Yunnan Prov., China
6.2x
4.0x 4.1 cm
$39
An
interesting miniature specimen of veszelyite on hemimorphite form a find
made approximately 3 years ago. Granted, the veszelyite crystals
are microscopic, but it still represents an interesting occurrence of
the species from a mine other than the Black Pine in Montana.... and it
is considerably more affordable.....

7.1x
4.3x 0.9 cm

I
found a couple more valentinites that for some reason did not make it
into the main update. This was one of the couple matrix specimens

antimony oxide, the crystals are actually huge for the species.
Plus, I don't think you'll find a cheaper example anywhere else...

CLH41
Calcite on Calcite on Quartz
Nasik
Area, , Maharahstra Prov., India
11.0x
9.6x 4.9 cm
$78
A
really cool calcite specimen.. I had considered putting it on a main
update page for considerably more, but I figured I'd post it here
instead.
It
consists of a dark chocolate brown calcite scalenohedron laying flat
against a quartz matrix colored bluish by an underlying layer of
chalcedony. The calcite itself has been overgrown in parts by
lighter brown rhombs, all making for an interesting
contrast. There is a bit of damage.

specimen of babingtonite from India. This quarry is actually
located in the greater Mumbai area, and urban sprawl means that no more
of this material will be coming out in future. Other notable
localities for babingtonite include Meigu Co., China, and a few quarries
in the American northeast (Connecticut, New Jersey.)

CLH55
Fluorite on Quartz
Huanggang
Mine, Hexigten Banner (Keshiketeng Co.), Ulanhad League (Chifeng
Prefecture), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China
8.6x
5.8x 5.3 cm
At
Tucson 2011, a single dealer had a small quantity of these very unusual
fluorites. I
have since been able to track down a few more from multiple different
sources. These
are really unusual, in that the fluorite crystals (on all but one
specimen) tend to form ball-shaped aggregates composted of numerous
small octahedral crystals. The color of the individual
crystals ranges from a bluish green in most, to a purple in others.
These
fluorites are really quite unique, in terms of color as well as habit. The
habit of the quartz in the matrixes also gives the specimens an
appearance unlike fluorites from anywhere else.
This
piece has a bit more damage and roughness than the ones I posted on my
main Inner Mongolia update, so the price is considerably lower. A
good reference specimen.

comparable Peruvian material today. This days, many of the
Romanian mines are closed, and the material is not as common.

CLH58
Ludlamite
Estaño
Orcko mine, Machacamarca District, Cornelio Saavedra Province, Potosí
Department, Bolivia
4.5x
2.0x 1.8 cm
$38
A
fairly large ludlamite crystal with weathered crystal on a scrap of matrix,
from recent finds in Bolivia.
Good
ludlamite has not been found anywhere in the world for some time.
The last decent find of the material was nearly 10 years ago at the
Huanuni Mine. The specimens from Santa Eualia, Mexico date to the
70-80's, those from Wheal Jane, UK date to the 1980's and much older,
those from Lemhi Co., Idaho are from the 1960's, as are the Brazilian
pieces. I'm not sure when exactly the Yukon or Kosovo specimens
were found, but it certainly wasn't within the last 10 years.

MMX16
Siderite, Quartz
Morro
Velho Gold Mine, Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, Brazil
7.4x 4.3x 2.8 cm
$165
$75
In the 1970's and 1980's, the
Morro Velho Gold Mine produced some of the finest siderite recovered
up until that time. Today, although scarce, these classics are
still considered to be among the finest of their species. This
is a cabinet specimen, composed of numerous siderite disks and rhomb.
Some are coated with pyrite, and there is a minor quartz association.
Towards the right side of the
specimen, you can see the some of the translucent, honey colored
siderite that made this find famous. Much more three dimensional
in person!

Along with the (relatively) more plentiful
tarbuttites from the Skorpion mine, a very small number of smithsonite
specimens were also recovered. This is the best example that I
was able to find.
All in all, this is an opportunity to get a good
smithsonite, from an unusual locality.

MATKN1 Spodumene

Kunnar, Afghanistan
6.7x
4.6x 4.6 cm
$475
$200
Here's something different: a matrix kunzite. The crystal is double
terminated,
and etched. What makes this piece interesting is that you can
see the outline of the crystal prior to being etched, in the form of
an indentation on the matrix. There is no damage, although the matrix
has been sawn up (not uncommon for Afghan pieces)

A
large cabinet specimen of olive green demantoid garnets on matrix.
I originally had this priced a four hundred and something, but in the

While the color is not the best, there is a lot of demantoid on this
piece!
