SMQ16 Cubanite, Pyrrhotite on Magnesite
Morro Velho Mine, Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, Brazil
11.3x 9.1x 3.6 cm
$850

When most of us hear the word cubanite, what comes to mind are the brassy, rounded crystals from Chibougamu, Canada. This however, is an exceptional Brazilian example that dates to the 70’s. The individual are quite large from the locality, and there are quite a few of them. There are also a number of smaller pyrrhotites, but there are easily differentiated by their darker color (often also displaying iridescence), lack of striations, and flatter appearance.

The Morro Velho mine has operated since 1835, worked primarily for gold. Over the years, the mine has produced exceptional siderites, along with good quartz, scheelite, and Chalcopyrite.
