Pyromorphite
ASIA
Since late 1999, the Daoping Mine has been the
premier location for pyromorphite. As operations continued, the colors and
habits of the recovered specimens varied, and the find finally ended in
2005. Or so they thought. By late 2006 a new pocket had been
struck, and new, gemmy pyromorphite was brought to the market once again.
The specimens on this page come from all stages of the specimen recovery, and
encompass most of the different habits and froms.

Pyromorphite,
Daoping-Yangshuo Orebody, Guilin area, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,
Central South Region, China
7.7x 7.2x
3.2 cm
$2000
A cabinet
pyromorphite from a small pocket discovered in 2006, at mine near
the one that produced the original find.
This
specimen is interesting, in that it has the hoppered neon habit, right next
to lighter green, elongated crystals. The crystals reach 1.6 cm. The
overall color is brighter than the pictures suggest. A few of the
elongated crystals are missing, but it is hardly noticeable.
If you
missed out on a neon cabinet from the first find, here is a second chance.

A cabinet
pyromorphite from the finds of early 2000. This specimen has the much
sought after bright grass-green color that is almost impossible to find in
the specimens currently on the market, which usually have a much flatter,
darker green. The crystals on this specimen reach 1 cm.

4.0x 3.6 cm
$675
Here is a
matrix specimen on NEON green pyromorphite crystals to 1 cm, from a small
pocket found in late 2006. That's right--2006.
There was a
small find in a neighboring mine, so while the original finds of 2000-2004
have all been depleted, a small number of newer specimens were available
at the 2007 Tucson show.
The color is
not "grass green"--this is neon.

A really
screwy thumbnail, with the top color. I don't really know what to make
of it...but it is certainly unique among all the other Daoping pyros.
It looks like a very weird flower.

6.2x
4.0x 2.8 cm
$485
Another
Chinese pyromorphite. Although the color is darker, the crystals are
large--to 1.6 cm. Overall the specimen is very well balanced,
and very well crystallized. Some dealers were asking over $1600 for
similar pieces. I think this is much more reasonable.

8.4x
6.4x 3.6 cm

An unusual
specimen, in that the short, prismatic crystals are perched on quartz.
Many are arranged into ball shaped aggregates. Pyro/quartz
combinations were never too common, at any stage of pyro recovery.
