Manshera,
Kohistan District, NWFP, Pakistan
3.3x
2.1x 1.9 cm
$43
A decently sized
crystal of peridot from Pakistan. The color is excellent, and the
specimen is terminated. The way things are these days, you would
probably not be able to find one at this price from the Pakistani
dealers in Tucson

10.0x
9.0x 6.0 cm

of small crystals, and flattened examples.

Berry
Materials Corp. Quarry (North
Vernon Plant), North Vernon, Jennings Co., Indiana
8.0x
7.6x 5.5 cm
$50
A group of honey colored calcite crystals from the
Berry Materials quarry. These are probably some of my favorite
American calcites, and best of all, they are usually cheap. This
is a rather large example at a very good price.
|
 |

Weloganite
Francon
Quarry, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
5.7x
2.6x 2.3 cm

An
miniature specimen consisting of a terminated prism of weloganite on
matrix. The weloganite is a bit contacted on the back, but it
diplays well from the front.
Weloganite
is a very rare stontinum, sodium, zirconium cabronate known only from a couple
localities in Quebec, and South Africa. The best (and as far as I
am aware, only decent specimens) come from the Francon Quarry, which is
now closed.

Dist., Vakinankaratra Region, Antananarivo Prov., Madagascar
3.8x
2.3x 1.4 cm

euxenites from this locality. Radioactive.

|
CLW63
Samarskite
Ambatofotsikely
pegmatite, Fidirana Commune, Betafo Dist., Vakinankaratra Region,
Antananarivo Prov., Madagascar
3.1x
1.5x 1.5 cm
$48
A very
sharp crystal of samarskite from Madagascar. Most of the
samarskites I am accustomed to seeing are either rounded masses, or
chunks of shiny black stuff, where the lustrous surfaces indicate
extensive damage.
To
find sharp, terminated crystals like this is quite unusual.
Radioactive.

CLW68
Millerite with Calcite
Plymouth,
Illinois, United States
9.6x
8.3x 5.3 cm
$65
A somewhat matted patch
of millerite crystals on a matrix shared by tabular calcites.
Collected in the 1970's.
The piece is actually
quite rich for a midwestern millerite-- the most famous and abundant
examples are probably those from Kentucky, which typically only contain
a few fiber-like crystals in a geode.

CLF4
Cavansite
Wagholi,
near Poonah, Maharashtra, India
4.6x
3.9x 2.7 cm
$33
A bright blue cavansite ball
on matrix.
As an interesting side note, the quarry where
cavansite is found is located in a huge complex containing several very
large quarries. Cavansite
and pentagonite have only been found in any appreciable quantity in part
of one of those quarries, even though all are located within
approximately 2 square kilometers of land. |

|
CLF27 Chabazite
Freissen,
Eifel, Germany
12.2x
5.4x 5.5 cm
$60
A specimen of the zeolite
mineral Chabazite from Germany.
Thanks to India, zeolite
minerals tend to be regarded as common, but in actuality minerals like
this are encountered far less frequently in other parts of the
world. This is a good example of the species from a German
locality.

in the terminations.
It has some minor edge wear,
particularly on the back.

CLC17
Malachite ps. (and on) Cuprite
Rudabánya,
Rudabányai Mts., Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén Co., Hungary
1.6x
1.2x 1.1 cm
$46
A
rough pseudomorph of malachite after cuprite, though the cuprite has not
been entirely replaced.
This
is the other
European malachite ps. cuprite locality (Chessy, France) being the
most well known. This is not a spectacular piece, more of a
reference sample, but specimens from this mine are very hard to get.

Garfield
Hills, Mineral Co., Nevada, United States
7.7x
7.1x 3.7 cm
$65
A
rather attractive cluser of freestanding actinolite crystals, from a new
find in Nevada.
This
mineral usually forms dense aggregates of small crystals, or acicular

crystals.

CLA52
Cuprite
Rubtsovskoe
Cu-Zn-Pb deposit, Rudnyi Altai, Altaiskii Krai, Western-Siberian Region,
Russia
2.0x
2.0x 1.9 cm
$38
These
cuprites have been around for the last two years, more or less,
but the prices have been very, very high. I
purchased a few smaller specimens to put here at lower prices.
This is a nice thumbnail of the material, consisting of a single
octahedral crystal. Please note that any red hues you may be seeing
are because of the strong lighting. There is damage, but it's a
decent reference.
While
the price temporarily dipped low enough for me to be able to offer them
cheaply, please note that mining operations will have passed through the
zone where these cuprites occur within the next year, and then they WILL
disappear from the market.

|
CLA69
TopazJos,
Plateau State, Nigeria
2.0x
1.1x 1.0 cm
$32
A hard to find, colorless and terminated
crystal of Topaz from Nigeria. Nigeria's pegmatites produce a wide
variety of gem minerals, yet the market is tightly controlled by local
gem cartels.
Mining is conducted exclusively for gem
rough, and Nigerian dealers almost never sell on a piece-by-piece basis,
meaning that if you want to buy the one complete crystal in a 1 kg lot,
you would usually have to purchase the entire lot by the gram...
Obviously this makes no sense for a
specimen dealer, so specimens are rarely seen, despite the relative
abundance of Nigerian material and gem shows.

Madagascar
5.8x 3.3x 2.6 cm
$39
Epidote is one of those minerals that turns up in many
places, in many varried habits. Here is an unusual example from
Madagascar.
This is probably a new find, unfortunately most were
either pretty ugly or single crystals. This was the best one I
saw....
An interesting locality piece.... the only others I
have seen were very old.

A cluster of blady
cavansite crystals on matrix.
As an
interesting side note, the quarry where cavansite is found is located in

of one of those quarries, even though all are located within
approximately 2 square kilometers of land.

galena. This this in admittedly ugly, but the point here is the
seligmannite: the display face is totally sprinkled with microcrystals
of the rare lead,
copper, arsenic sulfide.

Calcite
First
Sovietskiy Mine, Dal'Negorsk, Primorskiy Kray, Russia
5.6x
3.0x 0.3 cm
$90
$36
Another odd new find from Russia, these are flattened
calcite clusters. I have no idea how they formed, but these were
two of the larger ones I could find. They reminded me a bit of
mushrooms... only in 2D.
Pieces like this are the previous specimen are what
make the mines around Dal'Negorsk such interesting localities.

CLB48 Galena and Sphalerite
Kruchev Dol Mine, Madan District, Southern Rhodope Mountains,
Bulgaria
5.5x 3.8x 2.4 cm
$38
A specimen of galena and sphalerite on quartz, from
Bulgaria.
It
comes with a North Star Minerals label dating it to 2006.
Much
better in person, there is more contrast between the galena and
sphalerite crystals, but the reflections of the black backgound on the
crystal faces in the picture causes it to look more jumbled.

 |
CLB49 Galena
Madan District, Southern Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria
6.6x
5.3x 3.2 cm
$48
A specimen of melted
looking galena from Bulgaria. It is a lot better than the pictures
show; in person the pieces is rther bright and you can see individual
faces. The many projections and monochrome nature of the specimen
made ti difficult to focus the camera and to take a photograph.

Pyromorphite
Huari-Huari
Mine, Serranía Huarihuari, Cornelio Saavedra Province, Potosí
Department, Bolivia
5.1x
2.8x 2.6 cm
$33
A
specimen of pyromoprhite from Bolivia. Comparatively speaking,
pyromorphite from virtually any other locality would put these to shame,
but what makes these interesting is that they are Bolivian.
Pyromorphite
is known from numerous locations on every continent where there are
mining operations, except, it would seem, from South America. From
the entire continent, I have seen only a few specimens from Ecuador, and
then these.
Interesting
material, from a find made about 3-4
years ago.
