Fluorite
Elmwood

CLE5
Cavansite
Wagholi,
near Poonah, Maharashtra, India
6.5x
4.9x 4.2 cm
$65
A
relatively
largecluster of
cavansite
crystals on matrix.
As an
interesting side note, the quarry where cavansite is found is located in
a huge complex containing several very large quarries. Cavansite
and pentagonite have only been found in any appreciable quantity in part
of one of those quarries, even though all are located within
approximately 2 square kilometers of land.

CLE6
Fluorite
on Quartz
De'An Mine, Jiangxi Prov., China
13.9x
8.5x 3.0 cm
$100
Several slightly etched purple fluorite crystals on matrix. These
are found with the fluorite crystals totally enclosed in quartz, and
they are then treated with hydrofluoric acid to dissolve the layer of
quartz and expose the crystals.
Priced
at my cost.

|
|

|

|
CLE11 Calcite
Daye
Mine, Hubei Prov., China
7.3x 5.5x 4.6 cm
$44
A calcite scalenohedron on matrix. For some
reason, calcites from the Midwestern USA do not get very much respect on
the international market, yet the quarries in that part of the country
have produced many good exmamples of the species, of which this is one.
|

|
|

|

|
|
CLE12
Columbite

Mies (Stribro), Bohemia, Czech Republic
5.1x
4.0x 2.9 cm
$48
Cerrusite from a classic European locality. Hard
to find material, damage free and very good for the price.
That the label says "Mies" instread of
"Stribro" is a testament to the age of the piece.

CLE28 Calcite
Yaogangxian
Mine, Yizhang Co., Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province, China

appears to be numerous tabular crystals arranged in a triangular spiral.

|

|
|

CLE31
Quartz incl.
Quartz Mahaiza
Area, Vakinankaratra Region, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar
5.7x
2.5x 2.0 cm
$33
At first glance, this looks like a
normal quartz crystal. When you look closely near the base
however, you can see that there is actually a quartz crystal INSIDE the
main crystal.
In Mahaiza, this stuff gets sold by
the kilogram in huge sacks. I usually don't bother with these
"hematoids" as they are locally known, but a miner showed me
this piece and I thought it was interesting.
|

|
|

|

|
|
CLE33
Selenite
Daye

Ambanja
Dist., Diana Region, Antsiranana Prov., Madagascar
5.0x
2.7x 2.4 cm
$48
A
couple green demantoid garnets on
matrix, from the recent find.
I
have sold most of these, so I can let this one goat a significant
discount.
|

|
|

|

|
|
CLE35
Epidote
Ankarafa,
Vohémar District, Sava (Northeastern) Region, Antsiranana Province,
Madagascar
5.8x 3.3x 2.6 cm
$39
Epidote is one of those minerals that turns up in many
places, in many varried habits. Here is an unusual example from
Madagascar.
This is probably a new find, unfortunately most were
either pretty ugly or single crystals. This was the best one I
saw....
An interesting locality piece.... the only others I
have seen were very old.
|

|
|

|

|
CLE36
Cavansite
Wagholi,
near Poonah, Maharashtra, India
4.2x
3.1x 2.0 cm
$34
A cluster of blady
cavansite crystals on matrix.
As an
interesting side note, the quarry where cavansite is found is located in
a huge complex containing several very large quarries. Cavansite
and pentagonite have only been found in any appreciable quantity in part
of one of those quarries, even though all are located within
approximately 2 square kilometers of land.
|

|
|

|

|
|
CLE37
Goethite ps. Pyrite Vakinankaratra
Region, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar
4.0x
3.5x 1.7 cm
$34
From anywhere else, this specimen
would be quite common. But from Madagascar (or anywhere in Africa
for that matter) pyrite is not something often seen.
An interesting locality piece.
|

|
|

|

|

CLE38

pictures. A locality piece.
|

|
|

|
CLE41 Danburite
Anjanabonoina Pegmatite,
Ambohimanambola Commune, Betafo
Dist., Antananarivo Prov., Madagascar
2.5x 1.1x 0.6 cm
$27
A
danburite crystal from Madagascar. Not
a spectacular piece, but a decent (and not often available) reference
specimen for the locality.
|

|
|

|

|
|

CLE42 Danburite
Anjanabonoina Pegmatite,
Ambohimanambola Commune, Betafo
Dist., Antananarivo Prov., Madagascar
3.6x
1.4x 0.1 cm
$30
A danburite crystal from
Madagascar. Not
a spectacular piece, but a decent (and not often available) reference
specimen for the locality.
The
trip between the pegmatite and the nearest village can be made in 8
hours by motoscooter, however many of the miners are too poor to afford
a scooter, leave alone gasoline or even shoes. Instead
they walk an astounding THREE DAYS to reach the village and sell their
wares, and then they must walk three days back to the mine.
|

|
|

|

|
|
CLE43 Chalcopyrite, Dolomite
Daye
Mine, Hubei Prov., China
7.9x 4.7x 3.4 cm

CLE51 Galena on Quartz
Madan
District, Southern Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria
6.6x
4.8x 2.7 cm
$48
A specimen of galena on quartz, from Bulgaria.
This looks a lot messier than it actually is, the flattened galena
crystals have many faces and it becomes very difficult to photograph.
|

|
|

|

|
|
CLE52 Quartz, Arsenopyrite
Yaogangxian
Mine, Yizhang Co., Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province, China
5.0x
3.0x 2.9 cm
$20
Arsenopyrite with quartz, from Yaogangxian.
|

|
|

|

|
|
CLE53 Calcite, Goethite
Palomo
Mine, Castrovirreina Prov., Huancavelica Dept., Peru
10.7x 8.7x 5.4 cm
$80
A large cabinet specimen of seligmannite on
galena. This this in admittedly ugly, but the point here is the
seligmannite: the display face is totally sprinkled with microcrystals
of the rare lead,
copper, arsenic sulfide.
|

|
|

|

|
|
CLE54 Calcite, Goethite
Berry
Materials Corp. Quarry (North
Vernon Plant), North Vernon, Jennings Co., Indiana
5.0x 4.5x 3.9 cm
$50
A homey colored calcite crystal from the Berry
Materials quarry. These are probably some of my favorite American
calcites, and best of all, they are usually cheap. This is a
rather large example at a very good price.
|

|
|

|

|
|

CLE56
Stibarsen
Pribram, Czech Republic
15.0x 4.6x 5.6 cm
$78
A cabinet specimen of dark stibarsen from a classic
European location. This is a rather large and very rich reference
specimen of this alloy of antimony and arsenic.
Very cheap for the size and richness.
|

Datolite, Quartz
Dal'Negorsk, Primorskiy Kray, Russian Far East, Russia
4.0x 2.1x 1.4 cm
$60 $30
A specimen from a small new find, there are two gemmy, light green
datolite crystals perched on a quartz crystal.
|

|
|

|
|
|
TJL15
Calcite
First
Sovietskiy Mine, Dal'Negorsk, Primorskiy Kray, Russia
5.6x
3.0x 0.3 cm
$90
$36
Another odd new find from Russia, these are flattened
calcite clusters. I have no idea how they formed, but these were
two of the larger ones I could find. They reminded me a bit of
mushrooms... only in 2D.
Pieces like this are the previous specimen are what
make the mines around Dal'Negorsk such interesting localities.
|

|
|

|

|
|
GAZ1-
Azurite
Altenmittlau, Freigericht, Spessart Mts, Hesse, Germany
5.3x 3.8x 3.4 cm
$120
$50
A difficult to come by specimen of primary German azurite.
Although the given locality information only specifies
Altenmittlau as the point of origin, I am reasonably certain that it is
from the Schmitt Dolomite Quarry, in Altenmittlau.
|

|
|

|
|
|
CNO6
Calcite
Daye
Copper mine, Daye Co., Huangshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, China
12.3x 8.5x 6.7
cm
$65
There were a
lot of "poker-chip" calcites being offered a few years ago, but this one was a
bit different. The individual "towers" are iron stained, but only on one
side. Saw marks on the reverse.
|

|
|

|

|
CLB12 Pyrite
Stalactite
Culcani,
Peru
8.7x
3.0x 2.5 cm
$48
A
pyrite stalactite. It is missing its tip, but still a nice
formation for the price.
|
 |
 |
 |
CLB13 Pyrrhotite
Santa
Eualia District, Mun. de Aquiles Serdan, Chihuahua, Mexico
3.5x
3.4x 2.9 cm
$48
A
classic old Mexican pyrrhotite. This piece is damage free, and
consists of several pyrrhotite prisms. As is typical of these Mexican
pyrrhotites, the crystals gradually taper towards the
termination.
It's
harder to find these now, especially damage free pieces like this.
Virtually all the pyrrhotite on the market is from Dal'Negorsk.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB14
Smithsonite
Choix,
Sinaloa, Mexico
9.6x 5.0x 4.3 cm
$58
A cabinet specimen covered with botryoidal
pinkish-purple smithsonite. Very rich, and cheaply priced, particularly given its
size.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB16
Fluorite
Hammam
Zriba Mine, Hammam Zriba, Gouvernerat of Zaghaoun, Tunisia
4.5x
4.0x 3.0 cm
$36
A rare specimen of
Tunisian fluorite. These were brought out years ago by Dan
Weinirch, and this piece is accompanied by his label. A good
reference specimen from this unusual locality.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB18
Stibnite
Romania
6.1x
4.2x 4.1 cm
$65
A very old cluster of
stibnite crystals from Romania. Unlike the later specimens which
consisted of radiating clusters of small, thin crystals, this piece is
composted of very thick almost flattened prisms.
These mines are mostly
closed today, and this is a very nice example of this classic, and once
plentiful material. The bottom right image is of the underside of
the specimen.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB21 Apophyllite on Amethyst
Nasik
Area, Maharashtra Prov., India
6.5x
4.8x 3.1 cm
$36
A nice example of apophylilte on amethyst. These
two species are not usually found together, despite being fairly common
in the Deccan Plateau. Usually, the amethyst is found with calcite
or okenite.
|
 |

The polished half of a datolite nodule from the copper
country of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Decently sized, too... I
lived in Michigan for 4 years and was surprised to find that the vast

CLB27 Hemimorpite
Wenshan,
Yunnan Prov., China
7.4x
6.4x 3.4 cm

1.2x
0.9x 0.6 cm
$19
A
small thumbnail of kesterite, coated with pistachio green mushistonite.
Please note, this is very small.... the camera did an exceptionally good
job of magnifying it.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB36 Apophyllite
on heulandite
Near
Nasik, Maharashtra Prov., India
8.2x
3.2x 2.8 cm
$27
Several nearly colorless apophyllite and stilbite
crystals perched on a heaulandite stalactite.

 |
 |
 |
|
CLB37
Calcite
(Scalenohedron AND Rhomb!)
Nasik
Area, Maharashtra, India
5.5x
2.0x 1.9 cm
$34
A very interesting calcite from
India. Ordinarily calcite crystals only display a single habit (scalenohedrons,
rhombs, etc) but this piece has BOTH naturally occurring on one
specimen.
I found this to be quite
unusual... so while it is quite inexpensive, it is fairly unique for a
very common mineral.
|
 |
 |
 |
CLB45 Chlorite
included Quartz
Balcoll
Mine, Falset, Priorat, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain
9.7x
6.7x 3.7 cm
$34
A pair
of intersecting quartz crystals with green chlorite inclusions.
|
 |
 |
 |
CLB46 Galena
Moglia Orebody, Madan District, Southern Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria
7.8x
6.0x 4.3 cm
$48
A very
bright crystal of galena on a quartz matrix. Bulgarian galenas
tend to be much brighter than their American counterparts; their
surfaces are smoother so they reflect light better. American
galenas often have an almost matte surface (particularly the classic
Pitcher, Oklahoma specimens), and the larger crystals usually have sides
composed of many smaller faces.
It
comes with a North Star Minerals label that dates it to the early
1990's.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB48 Galena and Sphalerite
Kruchev Dol Mine, Madan District, Southern Rhodope Mountains,
Bulgaria
5.5x 3.8x 2.4 cm
$38
A specimen of galena and sphalerite on quartz, from
Bulgaria.
It
comes with a North Star Minerals label dating it to 2006.
Much
better in person, there is more contrast between the galena and
sphalerite crystals, but the reflections of the black backgound on the
crystal faces in the picture causes it to look more jumbled.
|
 |
 |
 |
CLB49 Galena
Madan District, Southern Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria
6.6x
5.3x 3.2 cm
$48
A specimen of melted
looking galena from Bulgaria. It is a lot better than the pictures
show; in person the pieces is rther bright and you can see individual
faces. The many projections and monochrome nature of the specimen
made ti difficult to focus the camera and to take a photograph.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB53 Cerussite
Toussit, Morocco
5.0x 4.1x 3.1 cm
$38
A cluster of chunky cerussite crystals on matrix from Morocco.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB54 Calcite
Berry Materials Quarry, North vernon, Indiana
3.4x
2.2x 2.4 cm
$28
A
complete crystal of honey colored calcite on matrix from the midwestern
United States. These are among my favorite calcites, yet for some
reason (and despite counting some very fine examples among their ranks)
Midwestern calcites do not get all that much attention.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
CLB56 Calcite
Hunan Prov., China
6.8x
5.2x 3.2 cm
$38
A
tabular calcite crystal on matrix.
|
 |
 |
 |
CLB57 Galena
Viburnum Trend, Missouri, United States
4.0x
2.5x 1.7 cm
$26
A very nice, but small specimen of galena on pyrite
from the USA.
